------The Mohawk isn't as hair-raising as it used to be------

    By Olivia Barker, USA TODAY

    By Shaun Best, Reuters
U.S. soccer player Clint Mathis is known for his Mohawk.

The Mohawk is rising again, and not just from the pates of punks.

World Cup soccer studs, French fashion leaders and their Hollywood followers — likewise trendy types in New York and Los Angeles — are molding their hair up into a ridge that snakes down the center.

But today's Mohawk is more about fashion than aggression. Lads from Jack Osbourne and David Beckham to Jude Law and Ryan Phillippe aren't shaving the sides, and, for the most part, they're steering clear of shocking-pink dye. The spikes, sculpted with pomade or gel rather than the egg whites and Aqua Net of yore, are rarely more than a few inches off the scalp.

Which has led many purists to dub this incarnation "the fauxhawk." Rather than a rooster's regal comb, the effect is sneaky, like the ruffled fur on the back of a cat about to pounce on its prey.

"It's not as radical as it was in the punk rock days. This is much more tame," says celebrity stylist Charles Worthington, who reports that the 'do is a "very asked-for look" at his five London salons. "Even guys who are normally strait-laced and conservative are sporting the look. It's a sign that men are being a little more experimental."

Greasing your locks up into a gentle peak or crest is "not that much of a commitment," explains Adam Rapoport, a GQ senior editor who's working up a flattop-to-fauxhawk history of hair for the magazine's 45th anniversary issue in September. Though Christian Dior creative director Hedi Slimane first tugged up his tresses a few years ago, Rapoport points to Tintin, the beloved Belgian cartoon character with the extra-jaunty blond cowlick, as a possible early muse.

"Proper, classic Mohawks," the kind worn by guys in leather jackets with band names like The Exploited scrawled across the back, never really went away with a certain crowd, Rapoport says.

So it's no surprise there's a rift wider than a Mohawk itself between the rebellious originators and the glamorous co-opters.

"I call those chickenhawks," snorts Siege, nee Clayton Cubitt, a Brooklyn photographer who's currently crowned by a "low-key, standard-issue" black Mohawk à la Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.

"It's a fear of haircut commitment," says Siege, 30, who likens the new look to a bad case of mange. "It's a way to feel kind of punky, kind of hip and not have to commit."

Once he sees too many Wall Streeters doing their best Travis Bickle, Siege plans to revive that other '80s iconic coif: Ralph Macchio's parted-down-the-middle-and-feathered-on-the-sides style from The Karate Kid.

    DIG THIS TRUE STORY!!!
Cyclist Beats Straphanger and Taxi Rider in Monday AM Commuter Race

On Monday morning, commuter bicyclist Paul S. White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, won the Bike Month NYC 2004 Commuter Race by making it from Juniors Restaurant on Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues in Brooklyn to Columbus Circle in Manhattan in 25 minutes. White beat taxi rider Jon Orcutt, Executive Director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, by five minutes and subway rider, Gene Russianoff, Senior Attorney for NYPIRGs Straphangers Campaign, by ten minutes.

White, a regular bike commuter, reported that he was happy that his "victory proves to would-be bike commuters that getting to work by bike is fast and easy." He encouraged others to "take advantage of the good summer weather and give bike commuting a spin."

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::JOEY RAMONE PLACE:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    It is now finally official!
The City Of New York dedicated the corner of Bowery and Second Street as Joey Ramone Place on November 30th, 2003 at 1:00pm. Contrary to other reports elsewhere that this was a done deal long ago, New York finally gave it up for Joey Ramone!

On Sunday, November 30, 2003 the City of New York officially named the corner of Bowery and Second Street "Joey Ramone Place" in a ceremony honoring the late rock music legend. The street sign dedication was the culmination of the efforts of his fans, family, contemporaries, community and the city itself to recognize Joey Ramone's historic achievements and contributions to New York City's music scene. It's a fitting tribute to a man known and loved in New York and throughout the world for his contributions to the creation of the genre of music known as "punk rock"; which, not coincidentally, was born out of and first defined on the streets of the East Village. In fact, Joey Ramone is credited so much so for that genres creation he is universally hailed as "The King of Punk". As the singer of The Ramones, and long-time East Village resident, Joey’s talent, influence and passion for music remain imprinted on this lower east side neighborhood. No one did more than he to continuallly nurture a downtown music scene that provided, and proved to be, a spawning ground for new talent to develop. The location of the sign, marking one of the corners closest to renowned punk nightclub CBGB's, is significant to his millions of admirers worldwide.

New York City Council Members Alan Jay Gerson (1st. District) and Margarita Lopez (2nd District) officiated at the joint co-naming of Joey Ramone Place. The event, which was open to the public, began inside CBGB's at 315 Bowery (between Bleeker and 2nd Street) and continued at the corner of Second Street and Bowery. Joey's family asked long time friends Legs McNeil and John Holmstrom, the co-founders of PUNK Magazine, to preside over the initial part of the ceremony which featured brief appearances by speakers including: Tommy Ramone, Marky Ramone, Steven Van Zandt, Hilly Kristal, Jim Jarmusch, Danny Fields, Lenny Kaye, Kevin Patrick, Arturo Vega, Jesse Malin, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Andy Shernoff, Richie Stotts, Donna Gaines, Meg Griffin, Vin Scelsa, Rachel Felder, George Seminara, Phil Hartman (FEVA), Tish & Snooky (Manic Panic), Ray Goodman and Jimmy Webb (Trash &Vaudeville), Sonia Sanchez (Wowsville), Dave Frey, Sy Hyman, Mickey Leigh, and Charlotte Lesher.
